Vocational training

What is vocational training?

Many professions in the field of health care and education require qualifications based on vocational training.
There are two types of vocational training in Germany:

Dual vocational training
Dual vocational training (e.g. in nursing) is a unique form of on-the-job training. It combines practical training in a company or workplace with theoretical education at a vocational school (Berufsschule). Typically, individuals spend one or two days a week at the vocational school, where they learn the theoretical foundations of their chosen profession. The remaining days are spent working in a company, gaining practical experience and applying the knowledge learned in the classroom.  This type of training has many advantages:
  • You will gain a lot of practical experience. This will give you an ideal start into your professional career.
  • You will earn money right from the beginning of your training. Companies will pay you a salary that is generally sufficient to cover your living costs. The salary increases with every year of training.
  • You have good chances of being offered a permanent job after completing your vocational training. Many companies look for trainees and skilled workers with vocational qualifications.
Commonly, dual vocational training has a duration of 2 to 3.5 years and begins in September.

School-based training
For some types of training (e.g. educator or physiotherapist), you will spent most of your time at a vocational school (Berufsfachschule or Berufskolleg). In most cases, a school-based training does not include a salary
