Tips

If you want to live in Germany, it's important to learn German, especially if you're looking for a job and need to communicate with offices, authorities, or schools. German language skills are also important for social interactions. Learning a new language should be fun. Here are some tips:

  1. Attend a language course. The best option is to take a language course in your country of origin. This will help you to prepare yourself for your stay in Germany.
  2. Repeat new words. Make grammar exercises. Read your notes frequently.
  3. Train your listening skills. Listen to the German radio or to German audio books. You can download audio books from the internet or buy them on CDs.
  4. Watch the news or your favorite movies in German. This will help you learn new words and listen to people speaking German.
  5. Read books and papers. Reading helps you to learn new words. Start with children’s books and comics. They are entertaining and easy to read. As your language skills improve, you can move on to newspapers and magazines.
  6. Read texts out loud. This is a good exercise for improving your pronunciation. Meet people and talk with them in German. If you do not have any contacts to Germans so far, consider visiting a sports club, a café, a concert or a festival. This will give you the opportunity to meet new people.
  7. Find a friend, who wants to learn your language. You can create a language exchange partnership (tandem). This way, you may learn German. He or she may learn your language.
  8. Always communicate in German when interacting with others. Avoid using English as much as possible. It may be challenging at first, but you do not have to be afraid to make mistakes. Let the other person know, if there is something you do not understand. Encourage other people to speak slowly and to use simple words.
  9. Be patient and take your time. German is not an easy language to learn.
